Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji run on different dates
The 2026 autumn night openings run on different dates at Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) and Kodai-ji (高台寺). Check the dates for the temple you want to see before you choose your hotel night.
Scroll the table sideways. With a keyboard, move focus to the table and use the arrow keys.
| Place | Dates | Last entry and closing | Planning notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kiyomizu-dera | November 21 to 30 | Last entry 21:00 Closing 21:30 | Early and mid-November fall outside this night opening period |
| Kodai-ji | October 23 to December 13 | Lights on 17:00 Last entry 21:30, closing 22:00 | There is no separate day and night changeover, but you cannot re-enter on the same ticket after leaving |
The official Kiyomizu-dera schedule and the official Kodai-ji schedule were checked on October 5, 2026. The event period and the best time for autumn color are separate things. Because the Kodai-ji period in particular is long, check the foliage condition and any event change notices before you leave.
This plan has you enjoy one night viewing in Higashiyama. Rather than rushing from Kiyomizu-dera to Kodai-ji before closing, leaving time at one place for the slopes and the wait to enter lets you see it more calmly.

Choose your hotel by your next-day plans and luggage
Scroll the table sideways. With a keyboard, move focus to the table and use the arrow keys.
| Option | Plan it suits | Travel that remains |
|---|---|---|
| Keep your Osaka hotel | Kyoto as a day trip, with Osaka sightseeing the next day | Walk to the station after the visit and take a train to Osaka |
| One night in Kawaramachi | Rest after the night viewing and take another walk in Kyoto the next morning | Move your luggage to Kyoto. It is a different area from JR Kyoto Station |
| One night at Kyoto Station | Leaving by JR the next morning, or carrying large luggage | Return to Kyoto Station after the Higashiyama visit |
If you add a night in Kyoto, timing it with the day you check out of your Osaka hotel, or the night before you move on to your next destination, keeps you from paying for two hotels. If you keep your Osaka room and also book one in Kyoto, weigh the convenience of leaving luggage in Osaka against the extra hotel cost.
Add the transport costs of everyone in your group to the cost of the stay. If you have only one day in Kyoto, staying in the same hotel without repacking can be easier.
Afternoon in Higashiyama, one temple at night
This is an example that starts in the afternoon of a night-opening day. Skip a morning trip as far as Arashiyama and keep time for walking and resting in Higashiyama.
Scroll the table sideways. With a keyboard, move focus to the table and use the arrow keys.
| Time of day | If you return to Osaka | If you stay in Kyoto |
|---|---|---|
| Afternoon | Leave large luggage at your Osaka hotel and go to Higashiyama | Leave luggage at the hotel and go to Higashiyama. Check the luggage-storage conditions beforehand |
| Before sunset | Walk Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka → rest → early dinner | |
| Night | Night opening at Kiyomizu-dera or Kodai-ji | |
| After the visit | Go to the station to match the train you will take → Osaka hotel | To the hotel → check in or rest |
| Next morning | Osaka sightseeing | Walk near the hotel → collect your luggage → next destination |
Even if the night opening runs late, nearby restaurants and shops are not necessarily open until the same hour. Check the opening hours of any shop you want to visit, and have dinner before heading to the temple. Avoid plans that take a large wheeled suitcase onto slopes and steps.
If you stay in Kawaramachi, you can add a short walk around the Kamo River the next morning and collect your luggage at the hotel. If you stay at Kyoto Station and leave in the morning, moving on after breakfast is less strained than adding a distant sightseeing spot. Ask the hotel about luggage storage before check-in and after check-out.

Choose your route back from the location of your Osaka hotel
For Umeda, take the Hankyu line from Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station
Higashiyama → Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station (京都河原町駅) → Hankyu Kyoto Line → Osaka-Umeda Station → hotel
Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station and JR Kyoto Station are in different places. If you are returning to a hotel in Umeda, compare the route from Higashiyama to Kawaramachi with a route via Kyoto Station. The timetables for weekdays and for Saturdays and holidays are separate. Some late trains do not go as far as Osaka-Umeda, so check the destination and any transfer as well as the departure time.
For Yodoyabashi, Keihan is also an option
Higashiyama → Kiyomizu-Gojo Station or Gion-Shijo Station → Keihan → toward Yodoyabashi
If your hotel is somewhere other than Umeda, compare Keihan as well. If you are staying in Namba, work out the way back including the subway and other connections after you arrive at Yodoyabashi. Stopping stations differ by train type, so also check that the train stops at the station where you board.
Even if you stay at Kyoto Station, you still need to travel from the temple
Kiyomizu-Gojo Station → Keihan → Tofukuji Station → JR Nara Line → Kyoto Station
This is a route you can compare for returning from Kiyomizu-dera to Kyoto Station. The JR West Kyoto route map shows where to change at Tofukuji. Also check the connections for your travel date.
According to the official Kiyomizu-dera access guide, the temple is about a 25-minute walk from Kiyomizu-Gojo Station. The time you leave the temple is not the time you reach the station, so leave time for the walk to the station and for getting to the platform. This is not the walking time from Kodai-ji to a station.
Choosing a train with almost no margin on the assumption that you can catch a taxi as soon as the gate closes is risky. Work back from the train you want to the station, and decide in advance the time at which you will cut your visit short.

Three hotels matched to how you will return
These candidates are based on your movements after the visit and the next morning. Availability and prices for a specific date were not checked. Check the bed configuration, the check-in deadline and the cancellation conditions in the rate plan.
Staying in Kawaramachi: GOOD NATURE HOTEL KYOTO
According to the official guide, it is about a 2-minute walk from Exit 4 of Hankyu Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station and about 5 minutes from Exit 3 of Keihan Gion-Shijo Station. It is an option when you want to keep walking in Kyoto the next day, but it is not right next to a temple, so you still have to travel after the visit.
The address is 318-6 Inari-cho, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto. Enter through the hotel entrance to the left of GOOD NATURE STATION and go to the front desk on the 4th floor. Hotel access guide.

Leaving by JR the next morning: Hotel Granvia Kyoto
This hotel is directly connected to JR Kyoto Station. It suits a next-day move to another city by JR, or an arrival at Kyoto Station with large luggage. After a night viewing in Higashiyama, you have to return to Kyoto Station.
It is on the Central Exit side of JR Kyoto Station, postal code 600-8216. Even inside the station, follow the signs to the hotel entrance and front desk, and leave time the next morning to get to the platform. Hotel access guide.

Keeping your Osaka stay: Hotel Hankyu Respire Osaka
According to the official guide, it is about a 5-minute walk from Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Station and about 3 minutes from the connecting-bridge exit on the 3rd floor of JR Osaka Station. It is an option for a trip that returns from Kyoto by Hankyu and uses Umeda as the base the next day.
The address is 1-1 Ofukacho, Kita-ku, Osaka. The lobby is on the 9th floor of Yodobashi Umeda Tower. It is a different hotel from the ones with "GRAN" in their names. If you have already booked a hotel in Namba, compare the route back to that hotel before you change hotels. Hotel access guide.

If several people share one room, check the capacity and the actual bed configuration. The name "twin" alone does not guarantee use by three people or an extra bed.
On rainy or tiring days, shorten the daytime walk
On days with strong rain and wind, or when you are tired from walking, shorten the walk along Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka and rest before dinner. Staying in Kyoto does not mean you have to pack in two night viewings.
If you are running short of time to catch the train back to Osaka, head to the station rather than taking more photos. If bad weather causes an event cancellation or a train suspension, drop the night viewing and switch to a plan of spending the evening near your hotel.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see Kiyomizu-dera's autumn night opening on November 10?
In 2026 it starts on November 21, so November 10 falls outside the period. Kodai-ji is within its period, but check that day's foliage condition separately.
Can I leave Kodai-ji in the daytime and return at night on the same ticket?
There is no day and night changeover, but once you leave you cannot re-enter on the same ticket. If you plan to have dinner outside, rethink your plan starting from the time you first enter.
Is it fine to stay until closing as long as I catch the last train?
On top of the walk to the station, you still have the train's destination, any transfers and the trip to your hotel after you arrive in Osaka. Gate closing and the last train are only two of the times that matter; check the route all the way to your hotel.
