The itinerary below assumes you arrive in Sapporo during the day and fly out in the afternoon or later on the last day. If you arrive late or take a morning flight, drop sightseeing on the first and last days. Before you book flights and a hotel, it helps to line up the round-trip bus to Jozankei first.
Early and late October do not offer the same autumn colors
Sapporo's official tourism guide generally gives mid-October to early November as the city's foliage season. The Jozankei Tourism Association presents the valley's autumn scenery as a highlight of an October trip. This range does not guarantee peak color on any particular date, and the city and the valley, which differ in elevation and weather, have to be checked separately. Read Sapporo's autumn guide and Jozankei's autumn guide together.

- Early October: The yellow of the city's ginkgo trees is not something to count on. Check Jozankei's same-day photos and service news first.
- Mid-October: Put the city walk and Jozankei on different days, and give the valley the day with the lower chance of rain in the forecast.
- Late October: The seasonal bus may have ended. Build the trip around the city, and make Jozankei a Kappa Liner trip with an onsen and a walk.

Three nights in the city: a 3-night, 4-day itinerary
Walk only around your hotel on arrival day, and use days 2 and 3 for Jozankei and a city walk. If you have already booked the Jozankei bus, fix that date first and adjust the other day. Adding Otaru or Biei to this plan cuts into your rest time first.

| Day | Route | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | New Chitose Airport → Sapporo Station → hotel → dinner | Flight arrival time and luggage storage |
| Day 2 | Sapporo → Jozankei → walk around the Futami Suspension Bridge → back to the city | Round-trip bus reservation, local weather |
| Day 3 | Hokkaido University → Odori Park → Tanukikoji → dinner | Walking distance and how far the foliage has progressed |
| Day 4 | Hotel check-out → Sapporo Station → New Chitose Airport | Airport check-in time and train service |

Day 1: from the airport to your hotel in one move
You can take the JR airport train from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo Station. According to JR Hokkaido, the fastest travel time is about 33 to 43 minutes, depending on the train type. That time does not include immigration, baggage claim, walking to the platform or waiting. Leave slack in arrival-day restaurant reservations. You can check which train to take in the airport train and reserved-seat guide.
Day 3: a city walk from north to south
Walk around Hokkaido University in the morning and move to Odori Park after lunch. Grouping dinner and shopping around Tanukikoji means fewer trips back and forth between your hotel and the sights. On campus, stay on the publicly open paths and avoid classroom and research areas.
On heavy-rain days, shorten the university walk and see the arcade section of Tanukikoji first. Closing days and opening hours differ by shop, so check separately if there is a store you must visit. Official Tanukikoji guide.

Day 4: on departure day, start with the airport transfer
If your flight leaves in the morning, an itinerary with no sightseeing is the right one. Even with an afternoon flight, decide the time of your airport train first and put breakfast or nearby shopping before it. A Jozankei overnight carries some risk of bus delays, so put it in the middle of the trip rather than on the night before departure.
Two Jozankei buses with similar names are booked differently
The Kappa Liner is the bus between Sapporo and Jozankei. According to Jotetsu, it takes about 60 minutes, and every trip runs on reservation. You can reserve from one month before the travel date until 17:00 the day before. If seats remain on the day, you can board without a reservation, but the trip should not depend on that. Official Kappa Liner timetable and reservation guide.
When you reserve, you must specify the boarding and alighting stops, and you cannot board at a stop other than the one you reserved. Seating is unreserved, so booking together does not guarantee you will sit side by side. Decide the return trip and its stop together with the outbound trip. Allow a generous gap before evening plans, given road conditions in foliage season.
The 2026 service ended on October 21. The dates and registration details below are historical. Check the association’s current notice before planning a later trip. The "Autumn Foliage Kappa Bus" is a separate product. It is a seasonal sightseeing bus that departs from the Jozankei tourist information center, and it is not the Kappa Liner you take from Sapporo. The 2026 guide lists it as running October 1 to 21, with same-day, on-site, first-come registration. Keep the tickets for the two buses apart. 2026 foliage bus guide.
Add one activity to your Jozankei walk
Onsen option: arrival stop → lunch → Futami Park and suspension bridge → day-use onsen → reserved return stop
Dam option: arrival stop → registration at the tourist information center → Hoheikyo Dam → lunch → walk around the town → reserved return stop (2026 service ended)
The 2026 seasonal bus to the dam has ended. For a later visit, do not follow this option without first checking current access with the dam and transport operator. For a first visit, plan around the onsen town and the walk around the Futami Suspension Bridge. If you choose the onsen, rest after lunch and the walk; if you choose the dam, go to the dam first, timed to a morning bus. Fitting the walk, dam, gondola and onsen into the same day makes it hard to match the first-come bus and your return time.

If you do not want to walk much: a walk and a day-use onsen
A walk around the town at lunchtime and a rest in an onsen suit this plan. Day-use bathing is separate from an overnight reservation, so check the reception hours, closing days and usage restrictions of the facility you plan to visit. Conditions on tattoos, children, towel rental and private-use baths also differ by facility. Choose a facility in the Jozankei Tourism Association's day-use onsen guide and check its official site.
If you want more valley scenery: Hoheikyo Dam (2026 service ended October 25)
The 2026 service ended on October 25. The dates, registration details and timetable below are historical and do not establish service on a future date. Check current dam access with the facility and transport operator. The 2026 Hoheikyo Dam Liner guide gives the operating period as October 3 to 25. Registration is first come, first served on the day at the Jozankei tourist information center; you get off at the dam parking lot and transfer to a paid electric bus. Allow about 2 hours from leaving to returning to the information center, and for the return you must take the designated same run. Official timetable and registration conditions.

The times below are a historical example from the 2026 timetable. The dam liner leaves the information center at 9:30, 11:00 and 12:00, and the last departure is at noon. If you definitely want to see the dam, arrive and register at the tourist information center before lunch and the suspension bridge walk. In an example that uses the 11:00 departure, you take the 12:45 return from the dam parking lot, arrive at the information center at 13:00, then continue with lunch and a walk around the town. Match this run, with plenty of margin, to the arrival time of your bus from Sapporo, and secure the Kappa Liner reservation back to Sapporo separately. If you cannot get a seat or the rain is heavy, switch to the town walk and the onsen. The dam liner does not stop at Hoheikyo Onsen, which has a similar name. Saving the two places separately on your map keeps you from mixing up the trips.

Three nights in the city or one night in Jozankei?
Choose three nights in the city to cut down on luggage moves and keep time for meals and shopping. If the onsen is the main purpose of the trip and you want to relax without watching the return bus time, switch to one night in Sapporo, one night in Jozankei and one night in Sapporo. On the day you change hotels, first line up where to leave your luggage and the hotel's meal times.
In the city, compare the area around Sapporo Station first, since the airport train is easy to use from there. If dinner and shopping come first, also look at the Odori and Susukino areas. What matters more than the hotel name is the walk from the actual entrance to the bus stop.
JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo: for staying next to the station
This is a hotel to compare if you want to combine the airport transfer and a city stay around JR Sapporo Station. The official address is 5 Kita 5-jo Nishi 2-chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo. If you are looking for a cheap hotel, this one is not a good benchmark; compare totals with other hotels near the station. Official hotel location guide.
After you enter dates and number of guests on a booking site, check the bed configuration, whether breakfast is included and the total with taxes. For a package that includes the spa, also check the age limits and extra charges. Two beds in the room photos do not mean three adults can stay.

Look at double and twin rooms for the dates you will be in Sapporo.
Jozankei Daiichi Hotel Suizantei: for one night of onsen rest
This is the alternative that stays in the Jozankei onsen town. The official address is Jozankei Onsen Nishi 3-chome 105. The hotel lists a reservation-only shuttle bus from Odori Nishi 5-chome. If you decide to stay, check shuttle seats and eligibility with the hotel before you book a regular bus separately. Official hotel access guide.
Even within the same hotel, in-room baths and meal inclusion can differ. The name "onsen hotel" does not mean every room has an open-air bath. To share one room among 3 to 4 people, enter the exact number of adults and children, and separately check capacity, number of bedding sets, and children's meal and rate conditions.

For a Jozankei stay, look at rooms together with the meal and onsen conditions.
Dress in layers, and think about slippery ground when choosing shoes
Walking in the city, going to the valley and riding the bus again changes how the temperature feels. Thin layers plus an outer layer against wind or rain work well. Decide how thick to dress from the forecast just before you leave. Rather than packing for "it's October, so one outfit will do", look at the walking time and the rain forecast together.
Jozankei's nature trails have dirt paths and steps. Bring comfortable walking shoes rather than shoes with slippery soles. If it rains, skip the valley trail and cut back to a short walk in the town. Tourism Association walking guide.

Common points of confusion before booking
Can I visit Jozankei as a day trip without a rental car?
Yes. Decide the round-trip Kappa Liner from Sapporo first, then plan to add either the onsen or the dam to a walk around the town. Check the on-site, first-come registration for the seasonal bus separately.
Can I still take the Hoheikyo Dam Liner in late October?
In the 2026 Tourism Association guide, the last operating day is October 25. Leave this bus out of plans after that date. If visiting the dam is the goal, check other ways to reach it on that date with the facility and the transport operator.
Can a couple, three friends or a family of four use the same itinerary?
You can use the main order of moves as a reference, but choose rooms separately. Couples should check bed preferences and how they will use the onsen; groups of 3 to 4 friends should first check room capacity and the actual number of bedding sets. With children, also check age-based rates, bathing restrictions and trail conditions, and reduce the day's walking.
If it rains, can I change the Jozankei day?
If you have booked a bus, check the change and cancellation conditions first. If you can move it, swap it with the city walking day; if not, adjust by shortening the valley walk. For suspended service or facility closures, check the official notice again on the day you leave.
