Two thresholds to look for in the tide table
According to the Miyajima Tourist Association, a tide below 100 cm is the level at which you can walk to the Great Torii, and a tide above 250 cm is the level at which the shrine looks as if it is floating on the sea. The thresholds are "below" and "above" respectively. The words "low tide" or "high tide" alone do not tell you that you can walk out or that the shrine will look afloat.

Check the tide table by entering your visit date. The Miyajima Tourist Association's table is based on Hiroshima Port, and its guide says the tide at Itsukushima Port is expected to change slightly earlier than the table shows. Rather than timing your arrival exactly to a predicted time, leave room for travel, and check the table and ferry notices again before you leave.
Plan the route around each day's tide sequence
First find in the tide table when the tide is above 250 cm and when it is below 100 cm. If the high tide comes first in daylight, you can see the Great Torii from the sea side and continue to the shrine, then walk toward the Great Torii in the low-tide window. If the low tide comes first, put the walk first instead. The order that is actually possible must fit the shrine's opening hours and that day's ferry service.

If the two tide windows fall at night or outside shrine viewing hours, avoid packing the schedule so tightly that you try to see both views in one day. If you plan to go inside the shrine, check the official opening hours. According to the 2026 guide, the shrine is open 06:30 to 18:00 from March 1 to October 14 and 06:30 to 17:30 from October 15 to November 30; the hours differ in other months.
The ferry from Miyajimaguchi to the island takes about 10 minutes. JR West Miyajima Ferry says it runs the "Great Torii Ferry Route", which gets close to the Great Torii, with departures from Miyajimaguchi from 09:10 to 16:10. Seeing the Great Torii from the sea is a different experience from walking to it from the shore at low tide, and this ferry time does not replace the tide thresholds. Check the timetable and operating status for your date, and on the island use the official Miyajima Tourist Association map to find the ferry pier and the shrine.
Hiroshima city or Miyajima: choose your base by the timetable
If the tide window falls in the daytime and you have room for a same-day round trip by ferry, keeping your hotel in Hiroshima city makes the plan simpler. The shrine's official guide gives about 30 minutes from JR Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Station, then a walk from the station to the port and a ferry of about 10 minutes. Use that as a reference and add transfers, walking and waiting separately.
If the tide you want to see fits only early morning or late hours, you can consider staying one night on Miyajima. Compare the trouble of changing hotels with the actual check-in and ferry schedule. After you decide the date, check the hotel conditions and the return trip separately.

Common questions before you go
Can I always walk to the Great Torii at low tide?
Not necessarily. The Tourist Association's threshold is below 100 cm. Check the time window in the tide table for your date, and follow the conditions and guidance on site.
Does the shrine look afloat at high tide?
The word "high tide" alone is not enough. The Tourist Association says the shrine looks as if it is floating on the sea when the tide exceeds 250 cm. Look up the predicted tide and times for your visit date.
If I take the Great Torii ferry route, do I not need to walk out to it?
They are two different experiences. The JR Great Torii route approaches the Great Torii by boat, while the moment when you can walk to it from the shore depends on a low tide. Decide first which one you want.
Hotels to compare for your route
Tides at Miyajima do not determine where you stay or which ferry you take. Compare a base near Hiroshima Station with one by the mainland ferry terminal at Miyajimaguchi, and check the ferry for both the outbound and return trips.
Hotel Granvia Hiroshima: For city plans and Miyajima trips from Hiroshima Station
Hotel Granvia Hiroshima is at 1-5 Matsubaracho, Minami-ku, Hiroshima. Its official information describes a connection to the Shinkansen exit at JR Hiroshima Station. Compare it if you plan to stay near the station and visit Miyajima by rail.
This is not a hotel beside the Miyajima ferry terminal, so allow separately for the train to Miyajimaguchi and the ferry to the island. Check the address and branch: Hotel Granvia Hiroshima is different from the similarly named Hotel Granvia Hiroshima South Gate. Before booking, confirm room occupancy, beds, breakfast, cancellation terms, and whether luggage storage is available before check-in or after checkout.

Miyajima Coral Hotel: For a base on the mainland by Miyajimaguchi ferry terminal
Miyajima Coral Hotel is at 1-9-8 Miyajimaguchi, Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. Compare it if you want to stay by Miyajimaguchi Station and the ferry terminal while planning a visit to the island. First note that the hotel is on the mainland, not on Miyajima Island.
If you plan to stay on the island for the evening scenery and return late, check the ferry schedule for your date regardless of the tides. A hotel booking does not mean you can return from the island at any time. Before booking, confirm room occupancy, beds, breakfast, cancellation terms, luggage storage, and how to contact the hotel about a late arrival.
