Finding a yatai in Nakasu, Tenjin, or Nagahama to fit your evening

Rather than looking for a "best yatai area" that suits every traveler, narrow the map by the place you have already planned for the evening and the direction you will head back to your hotel. The official Fukuoka City yatai list sorts individual stall locations into Nakasu, Tenjin, Nagahama, and other areas.

Scroll the table sideways. With a keyboard, move focus to the table and use the arrow keys.

Criteria for narrowing down an area
What to look at on the mapHow to chooseCheck just before you visit
NakasuIf your evening route is around Nakasu, check the stalls at that locationToday's opening indicator, the line, and each stall's menu and payment conditions
TenjinCompare it with your plans in Tenjin and the route back to your hotelThe address of the stall you choose and the days it is actually open
NagahamaIf you plan to go toward Nagahama, check the walking or travel routeLocation on the map, today's opening indicator, and transport back

This table does not rank the atmosphere or taste of each area. The method is to pick the stall you want on the map and then check that stall's own information once more. The "open now" filter in the official list is also only a pre-departure reference. It does not guarantee a seat on site or that the stall is open when you arrive. Check the area, food, and payment indicators on the official Fukuoka City yatai map and stall conditions.

If you are still choosing between Hakata and Tenjin for your hotel, see Hakata vs Tenjin: where to stay in Fukuoka for the return trip in the evening and for getting around. If you plan to look for a yatai right after a late international arrival, check the stall's opening and the transport separately, and start with how to get from the international terminal to Hakata and Tenjin.

Check opening hours stall by stall, not by a city average

Fukuoka City's tourist guide says some yatai open at 18:00 and most open between 18:30 and 19:00, then close around midnight. Start and end times differ from shop to shop, though, and with no fixed holiday each stall takes its own days off. Stalls may stay closed because of rain, storms, or the operator's circumstances. These hours are a city-level guide for gauging your schedule, and they do not promise that a particular stall is open today.

On the city's official stall list, look at the "open now" indicator and each stall's days, payment, and food information, and check for any notice from the stall before you leave. The yatai information counter at Fukuoka Airport's international terminal is a separate facility, so the counter's operating hours on the tourist guide page are not a stall's business hours.

Seats are small, so keep luggage and party size light

  • Fukuoka City's guide recommends small groups such as two or three people and says going alone is also fine. Seats are limited, so a large group may not get in. Ask the staff first.
  • If there is a line, join at the end and wait until staff show you in. Seating and how stalls handle waiting may differ by stall.
  • The guide says yatai have no restrooms. Check the nearest restroom beforehand, and leave large bags at your hotel or a storage place so you can travel light.

Unlike a restaurant with tables, a small stall has limited seats at its counter. With large luggage, a stroller, or a big group, ask whether they can take you before you join a yatai line.

Check menu prices and payment terms before you sit down

  1. Check the number of people and seats before you enter. If there is a line, join at the back and sit where staff direct you.
  2. Look at menu prices before you order. The city's guide recommends confirming prices before ordering. Mandatory appetizers and cover charges are mostly absent, but some stalls, such as bar-style yatai, may charge them, so ask first.
  3. One drink and one dish per person is introduced as good manners. Treat it as a courtesy rather than a mandatory minimum order at every stall, and follow each stall's signs and staff directions.
  4. Check cash and card acceptance stall by stall. The city's guide describes payment as mostly in cash, but card and electronic payment indications differ by stall. Bring cash, and check the payment icons and on-site notices.

Menus, cover charges, and payment methods can differ from stall to stall. Judge by the official map and the stall's menu on your visit day, and ignore old price lists found online.

If it rains or the wind is strong, keep yatai out of your fixed plans

According to Fukuoka City's guide, some yatai do not open in rain, in storms, or because of the owner's circumstances. Rather than hanging the core of your evening on one stall, plan so you can switch to another place to eat or an indoor route after checking same-day opening and the weather. For Fukuoka's indoor routes on rainy days, see the rainy-day 2-night, 3-day guide for Fukuoka.

If you plan to go to Dazaifu during the day and return to the city in the evening, first fit your round-trip train and bus times, then see Dazaifu half-day transport and worship order. All our Fukuoka and Yufuin trip-preparation guides are in the Kyushu travel hub.

Hotels to compare for your route

Hakata and Tenjin are different bases. Decide whether airport and JR connections matter more, or shopping and dining in Tenjin and departures on the Nishitetsu line. Then compare the actual entrances and room terms at these two hotels.

JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hakata Central: For using Hakata Station as a base and planning around luggage

JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hakata Central is at 2-2-11 Hakataekimae, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka. It is one option to compare if you want to use Hakata Station for airport and rail connections as well as city plans. It is a different property from the similarly named Blossom Fukuoka, so check the English name and address together.

If Tenjin is a main part of your itinerary, allow for a trip back from a different part of the city. Even a hotel near the station has an outdoor segment to its entrance; check the exit and route if you have large bags. Before booking, confirm the selected room’s bed setup, breakfast, and cancellation terms. Ask the hotel whether it can store luggage before check-in or after checkout.

Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Fukuoka: For Tenjin shopping and Nishitetsu departures

Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Fukuoka is at 2-2-43 Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka. Compare it if you plan to shop and eat in Tenjin, return to your room, and head out again. Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station and Tenjin Station on the Airport Line are not the same platforms; check which station and entrance suit your next trip.

If you often take JR trains from Hakata, you will need to plan the trip from this area to Hakata Station. A station connection in the building does not mean every entrance provides the same route to the hotel. Before booking, check the route to the hotel lobby, the room’s beds and occupancy, breakfast, and cancellation terms.
