Hakata or Tenjin: choosing the side that fits your plans

This table is a suggestion based on the locations of transport and facilities. Hakata also has shopping and dining, and you can travel to other areas from Tenjin, so neither area has to be better for every trip.

Hakata: when you want JR departures and the return to your hotel in one area

The area around Hakata Station has commercial facilities such as JR Hakata City and KITTE Hakata, and JR Hakata Station connects to Hakata Station on the city subway. If you want to eat and sort out your luggage in the same area before and after a rail trip, look at hotels around Hakata first. The Fukuoka Prefecture Tourism Association's Hakata area guide shows how the facilities are arranged.

However, "near Hakata Station" alone does not tell you the route to the train platform. In the hotel's official access directions, see which exit it uses as its reference, and check the walk inside the station and any roads you must cross. If you plan to check out just before a train, work out the time starting from when you leave your room.

Tenjin: when you go back to the hotel to rest during shopping

The Tenjin underground mall is reached from Tenjin Station on the Airport Line, Tenjin Minami Station on the Nanakuma Line, and Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station. Despite the shared name, these are not the same station. Tell apart the station and line nearest your hotel, and consider the route from the airport and the stores you will visit most. See the underground mall's station and bus access guide.

If you want to leave your shopping in your room or rest in the afternoon, choose a hotel based on the walk back from the stores. Check whether the underground mall and the hotel are actually connected indoors rather than assuming they are. The passages and the stores keep different opening times, so for an early arrival or a late return, check the opening hours by facility separately.

For international terminal transfers, compare the trip all the way to the hotel door

The Fukuoka Airport subway station is on the domestic terminal side. Taking the subway from the international terminal adds a ride on the free terminal shuttle first. If you choose a direct city bus, check the walk from the drop-off stop to your hotel as well. Subway and bus options from the international terminal to Hakata and Tenjin compares the route for each option.

If you add Yufuin, settle the round-trip transport before the hotel

For the train, check departures from Hakata Station; for the highway bus, first decide which boarding stop you will actually book. Nishitetsu's Yufuin-go is described as a reserved-seat service. Rather than assuming you can board the same day because of where you are staying, check the return trip along with the outbound trip. See the official Nishitetsu Yufuin-go guide.

Whether to keep your Fukuoka hotel or spend a night in Yufuin depends on your return trip and what you want to do there. Continue with alternatives when the Yufuin no Mori train is sold out, and choosing between a day trip and a night in Yufuin.

Once you have chosen an area, check the rooms and access conditions

  • Compare the hotel's exact name and address with the station exit you will use.
  • Check the number of guests, the bed configuration, and any extra bedding for each room type.
  • Ask the hotel you plan to book about luggage storage and the times you can check in.
  • Write down separately the time you will spend around the hotel and your days for trips outside the city.

Avoid calling a whole area cheap or expensive, and check room conditions rather than judging by the hotel's name alone. If rain is forecast, adjust your sightseeing order to your area with the Fukuoka rainy-day 2-night, 3-day indoor route. For the overall order of trip preparation, see the Fukuoka and Yufuin travel hub.

Hotels to compare for your route

Hakata and Tenjin are different bases. Decide whether airport and JR connections matter more, or shopping and dining in Tenjin and departures on the Nishitetsu line. Then compare the actual entrances and room terms at these two hotels.

JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hakata Central: For using Hakata Station as a base and planning around luggage

JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hakata Central is at 2-2-11 Hakataekimae, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka. It is one option to compare if you want to use Hakata Station for airport and rail connections as well as city plans. It is a different property from the similarly named Blossom Fukuoka, so check the English name and address together.

If Tenjin is a main part of your itinerary, allow for a trip back from a different part of the city. Even a hotel near the station has an outdoor segment to its entrance; check the exit and route if you have large bags. Before booking, confirm the selected room’s bed setup, breakfast, and cancellation terms. Ask the hotel whether it can store luggage before check-in or after checkout.

Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Fukuoka: For Tenjin shopping and Nishitetsu departures

Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Fukuoka is at 2-2-43 Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka. Compare it if you plan to shop and eat in Tenjin, return to your room, and head out again. Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station and Tenjin Station on the Airport Line are not the same platforms; check which station and entrance suit your next trip.

If you often take JR trains from Hakata, you will need to plan the trip from this area to Hakata Station. A station connection in the building does not mean every entrance provides the same route to the hotel. Before booking, check the route to the hotel lobby, the room’s beds and occupancy, breakfast, and cancellation terms.
