Start with the correct Chiayi station
A THSR ticket to Chiayi and a conventional rail ticket to Chiayi lead to different stations. Alishan Route A serves the THSR station, while Route B serves the city’s conventional station. If you arrive by THSR with a Forest Railway booking, allow for the additional transfer to the city station.
Include the walk from your arrival platform to the exit and the bus or railway boarding point, especially with luggage. Check your ticket and current signs for changes. Do not treat the two Chiayi stations as a short walking transfer.
Check the train’s final destination
Consider the Forest Railway main line if the train journey itself is part of your trip. The operator lists departures from Chiayi, but not every service reaches Alishan. Check whether your selected train ends at an intermediate station such as Fenqihu or Shizilu, and match the date, origin and destination in the booking screen.
A timetable stop at Fenqihu does not mean every train gives you the same visiting time. Compare the actual arrival time with hotel check-in and any planned forest walks. Read operating notices and date-specific booking results; this guide does not guarantee a service or seat.
The main line takes you uphill from Chiayi. The Zhushan sunrise branch is a separate journey within the mountains. A main-line ticket does not reserve the following morning’s sunrise train: check the route, day and ticket separately.
Match the bus route to its boarding point
From THSR Chiayi, check Alishan Route A, 7329 or 7329A. From the city’s conventional station, check Route B, 7322C or 7322D. Official directions identify Exit 2, Platform 7 at THSR Chiayi for A and the area in front of the conventional station for B; match these with your ticket and signs on the day.
Suffixes matter. Some buses go via Fenqihu, while others do not. Do not assume general 7322 services and the tourist shuttle share every stop. A sold-out train does not establish availability on a bus: look up the alternative separately.
Allow for traffic and operating changes on the mountain road rather than fixing a return connection from a map estimate. Choose whether you need to return to the THSR station or the city station when you book the uphill leg.
Bus reservations and train tickets are separate
The official Alishan A and B route pages restrict seat reservations to journeys between either Chiayi terminal and Alishan Transfer Station in both directions, excluding intermediate-stop journeys. Their language editions give conflicting advance-sale windows. Rather than counting a fixed number of days, check the actual opening date for your journey in the reservation system and the operator’s latest notices.
Board at the reserved departure point. Seats are not held for boarding at intermediate stops. The published instructions require showing the QR ticket to the driver at least 10 minutes before departure; failure to check in by 5 minutes before departure can forfeit the seat. Include this check-in time in your transfer allowance.
Railway and bus tickets use separate operators and booking systems. Changing one does not change the other. Check date, direction, stations, QR ticket and refund deadline separately, and use the seller’s instructions if weather or operations change.
Plan the onward leg before stopping at Fenqihu
A service going via Fenqihu is different from getting off and taking a later service. If you want to explore beyond a train’s scheduled stop, or eat after leaving a bus, identify the remaining transport and boarding point first. Do not assume a reservation to Alishan transfers to another bus after a stopover.
The tourist shuttle identifies Fenqihu’s first car park as the holiday boarding location, distinct from its weekday stop. Check current instructions for your day. Official guidance warns that bus luggage space is limited; ask your hotel about storage times, conditions and charges before relying on it.
Choose accommodation around the return connection
Choose the station you need after descending before settling on accommodation. An immediate THSR connection and a night in Chiayi require different onward arrangements. Allow for delays and avoid tight connections to commitments such as flights.
If you reach Chiayi late, do not confirm a mountain hotel around an unverified night service. Compare staying in the city and travelling up the next day. For sunrise, consider reaching Alishan and staying overnight beforehand; a Chiayi hotel does not solve the pre-dawn transfer.
Without dates and party details, compare location and access rather than promising prices or availability. Ask about arrival time, late check-in, meals, stairs, luggage handling and cancellation. These two hotels serve different bases rather than the same journey.

Nice Prince Hotel: a Chiayi city base
Nice Prince Hotel is at No. 600, Zhongxiao Road in Chiayi City. Its official site, Agoda and Trip.com addresses have been matched. It can be a base before travelling uphill or after returning to the city; it is not near Alishan. You must reach Chiayi Station for the onward journey and plan a mountain overnight stay for the sunrise train. The hotel’s station shuttle requires a reservation, so check its operating times and whether they fit your train or bus. Confirm room terms for your actual date before booking.
