Chiayi is a useful base for the main-line railway or bus journey up the mountain. For the early sunrise train, plan to reach Alishan and stay overnight beforehand. Do not assume you can remain in Chiayi, travel up before dawn and return after sunrise without checking the announced train time and road transport. This guide uses official transport and tourism information and does not guarantee seats or rooms for a particular date.

Choose a mountain stay for sunrise, or Chiayi for onward connections

A night in Alishan can make it easier to reach the Zhushan platform before dawn. Since departure varies by date, arriving and checking in the previous day gives you time to read the announcement. Access from the hotel still varies: ask about the first departure, meeting point, walking route and any early shuttle instead of assuming a shuttle is included.

Chiayi connects high-speed rail, conventional rail and city accommodation. The main-line timetable lists trains from Chiayi to Alishan, but check the number of services, journey duration and temporary notices. If you are starting from Chiayi, consider travelling up by train or scheduled bus and spending the night in Alishan before sunrise.

Combining a Chiayi return journey and the dawn train within a short trip can mean spending much of the day in transit. Match your arrival in Chiayi with the uphill connection and hotel check-in. Leave enough time after descending for your onward train or flight, and weigh the extra hotel move against a shorter pre-dawn transfer.

The Zhushan departure time is announced the previous day

The Zhushan branch serves sunrise viewing. The railway adjusts its schedule for the season and operating circumstances, and says the departure time is announced at about 16:30 the previous day on its website, at Alishan Station and at other designated locations. Avoid fixing an assumed departure time before booking accommodation; use that announcement and the forecast to plan the morning.

Sunrise time is different from train departure time. Allow for the train journey to Zhushan and the walk to the viewing area. The monthly sunrise table is useful for initial planning, but it is not the daily train timetable.

A train ticket does not guarantee a visible sunrise. Clouds, rain and visibility can change, and the operator explains that weather may prevent a sighting. Leave time for other walks and activities in the recreation area so that the trip does not depend on one view.

After sunrise, you can continue with forest walks in the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. Whether you descend the same day or stay another night depends on main-line and bus services. Check the connections to your next base before deciding.

Check online booking and station purchase conditions

The railway’s Zhushan guidance describes advance purchase through its online system and designated station counters. Station sales may be limited, so first check whether tickets for your date are on sale and read the payment, cancellation and sales conditions. Keep the sunrise train’s rules separate from the booking calendar for the Chiayi to Alishan main line.

The 2026 second-half holiday notice gives special online opening dates and says that ticket information for the Zhushan sunrise train on New Year’s Day 2027 will be announced separately. For holiday travel, check that notice rather than calculating a release date from the ordinary rules. Do not reuse the 2026 holiday calendar for later trips.

If the online result is sold out or shows no service, do not mistake a different route or date for a Zhushan ticket. Ask the railway or station about current counter sales and remaining tickets. A reseller’s page or an account of a previous trip is not proof of today’s rules.

The previous afternoon, check rain, cloud cover and recreation-area notices alongside the departure time. You can ask the hotel reception for help, but use the railway’s announcement as the final reference. Follow local instructions if weather or operations change, and check the terms of the ticket you bought for cancellation or refund conditions.

Use the official Forest Railway booking system to check your travel date. The operator’s payment notice requires immediate payment for online bookings from 2 March 2026. Read the payment deadline, ticket collection, cancellation and refund conditions shown for the actual booking before confirming.

Check the main line and road transport separately

The main-line railway and buses are options for travelling uphill from Chiayi. The published rail timetable includes Chiayi departures and Alishan arrivals, with some services stopping at Fenqihu. Check the exact operating date, time and stops before booking, then read the latest notices for temporary suspensions or weather changes.

The Alishan National Scenic Area’s official transport guide also covers road access from Chiayi. THSR Chiayi Station and TRA Chiayi Station have different departure locations. Match the station and bus stop to your ticket rather than relying on the name Chiayi Station alone.

Road journey times can change with traffic and operating conditions. If you combine a train and bus on the same day, check the transfer location, departure time and fallback connection if the first service runs late. Compare going straight to Alishan on arrival with spending a night in Chiayi before travelling up.

The published main-line timetable and older FAQ wording may describe different operating states. This guide uses the timetable’s listed Chiayi to Alishan services while directing you to date-specific notices. Do not conclude that the whole route is unavailable from an old FAQ or search snippet. Check the operator’s booking screen for your actual date.

Compare pre-dawn access in Alishan with transfers in Chiayi

A mountain stay reduces the early approach to the sunrise train, but check costs, room choices, evening meals and facilities before booking. Apparent proximity to Alishan Station does not establish the route to its entrance or platform, or an early shuttle. Check the date and room conditions, then match the address and property on each booking channel.

A Chiayi hotel can help with arrival the previous day or onward rail connections after descending. Staying in the city does not solve the pre-dawn journey if the first uphill train or bus does not connect. Compare a Chiayi night followed by an Alishan night with your available travel time.

Choose accommodation around the itinerary. Staying in Alishan shortens the approach before sunrise, but may require spending a day in the mountains and descending the next day. Chiayi can simplify rail and road connections, but you still need a verified way to reach the morning departure. Without travel dates, no room availability or occupancy can be promised.

On the booking page, check the exact hotel name and address, room occupancy and beds, breakfast and cancellation deadline. Ask the hotel directly about meals and shops if you will arrive late. In Chiayi, compare the walk to your departure station with luggage and the conditions for storing bags after check-out.

Nice Prince Hotel: a Chiayi city base

Nice Prince Hotel is at No. 600, Zhongxiao Road in Chiayi City. Its official site, Agoda and Trip.com addresses have been matched. It can be a base before travelling uphill or after returning to the city; it is not near Alishan. You must reach Chiayi Station for the onward journey and plan a mountain overnight stay for the sunrise train. The hotel’s station shuttle requires a reservation, so check its operating times and whether they fit your train or bus. Confirm room terms for your actual date before booking.

Build the itinerary around the previous day’s announcement

For a sunrise-focused visit, arrive in Alishan, check in, confirm the next morning’s Zhushan departure and take the train to the viewing area. Continue with forest walks as weather and energy allow. If you must descend to Chiayi that day, check downhill trains and buses alongside the final onward connection you need.

If you use the main-line train, its stopping pattern and any time at Fenqihu affect arrival in Alishan. A longer stop can allow time in the village, but may not suit an itinerary that tries to combine sunrise and the mountain journey within one day. Use the dated timetable to check the service and stop duration.

Allow time to switch to a park walk or a rest at the hotel if rain or cloud hides sunrise or the train time changes. Check official and local instructions in wet or foggy conditions. Set your return deadline first so you know when to finish the morning visit.

Before booking, check the main-line and bus services for your travel date, decide whether to stay in the mountains and then look up Zhushan tickets. After arrival, confirm the previous day’s departure announcement and forecast, and follow station guidance in the morning. Keep postponing or leaving out sunrise as an option if weather or connections do not work.
