This is a visit plan based on Royal Palaces and Tombs Center information checked on October 13, 2026. It is not a report based on checking live ticket availability or on-site waiting times. If you are visiting to photograph autumn colors, choose your session first and check the foliage condition separately just before you go.
On-site ticket if the Secret Garden is your goal, halls only if time is short

| Your situation | Choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| The Secret Garden is the main purpose of this visit and you can use the morning | Check the same-day on-site tickets first | Tickets are first come, first served, so a purchase is not guaranteed. You will have to change the rest of your plans to fit an available session. |
| You have other bookings or want to cut waiting time | Visit the palace halls only | You cannot see Secret Garden areas such as Buyongji. A palace-halls ticket is not a substitute admission for the Secret Garden. |
| You can change your visit date | Check Secret Garden sessions on another day | Check closing days and guide languages together, and change your plans after you have secured a new session. |
The official fee guide says online and on-site tickets sell out quickly in April and May and in October and November. Queuing does not guarantee entry, so decide in advance whether you will visit the halls or move your date if you cannot get a ticket.
Check the palace-halls ticket and the Secret Garden ticket separately
The palace halls are a building-focused visiting area, and the Secret Garden is a royal garden with forest, ponds and pavilions. The halls can be visited freely, but the Secret Garden is entered by set session and with a limit on numbers. Visitors gather at the Secret Garden entrance and go in with a guide, then either join the guided commentary or walk the open areas on their own.
To go to the Secret Garden you pass through the palace halls area, so you also need palace-halls admission. If you booked only the Secret Garden, check whether you also booked a halls ticket, and buy one on the day if needed. Check proof requirements and the scope of free and discounted admission in the official fee guide. The Palaces Combined Ticket does not include the Changdeokgung Secret Garden either.
If you decide to see only the halls, you do not need to wait for a Secret Garden session. Change the plan to buildings and courtyards; you cannot enter as far as the pond that appears in Secret Garden photos.

Book online 6 days ahead; tickets are sold on site on the day
Online booking for the Secret Garden runs first come, first served from 10 a.m. six days before the visit date (not counting the visit date itself) until the day before. For example, if you are thinking of a visit on October 20, booking opens on October 14 at 10 a.m. Times are Korean local time, and you need to check separately whether your date is a regular closing day or a temporary change.
You cannot book online on the day. On-site tickets for all of that day's sessions go on sale at 9 a.m., simultaneously and first come, first served. Under the official FAQ, each session holds up to 100 people, split into 50 online and 50 on site. Online sold-out and on-site sold-out are separate matters, but that does not mean on-site tickets remain.
- Check your visit date and the available guide languages in the official booking guide.
- If you could not get an online ticket and will try for an on-site ticket, plan your visit around the morning sale. The length of the line and your chances of success cannot be guaranteed in advance.
- On site, first check whether the session you want is on sale. If only another session is available, decide whether it overlaps with later bookings.
- If you cannot get a ticket, visit the halls only or choose another day. Continuing to wait at the ticket office does not give you a right of entry.

Choose the guide language and check eligibility together
Secret Garden sessions are divided into Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese. Remaining tickets in a foreign-language session do not mean Korean nationals alone can use it. The official FAQ restricts Korean nationals from foreign-language Secret Garden sessions, and says that only when accompanied by foreigners can up to 2 Korean nationals take part.
If you are visiting with someone from a different country, first check the session and conditions that suit everyone in your group. Choose a language session from the timetable shown on the booking screen. Session times shown in a Korean-language article may not apply to foreign-language schedules, and operating times are not always the same for every language.
Your reservation time is not your arrival time at the palace
At your Secret Garden reservation time you must be at the Secret Garden entrance inside the palace, not the outer palace gate. The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center says it takes at least 15 minutes on foot from the palace entrance to the Secret Garden entrance and advises you to enter the palace at least 20 minutes beforehand. In busy periods it recommends arriving about an hour early, so allow for ticketing and entry queues too.
Paper tickets can be exchanged at a self-service ticket machine or at the ticket office. The machine issues Secret Garden tickets until 20 minutes before the reservation time. The mobile ticket button is said to appear from 30 minutes before the entry time. Arriving late and simply opening the ticket on your phone will not work; leave time for entering the halls and walking inside. There is a notice that after the set time, entry and refunds are not possible.
Once you have a Secret Garden ticket, you can plan the order ticketing and entering the halls → gathering at the Secret Garden entrance → visiting the Secret Garden → visiting the remaining halls. If you want to look around the halls slowly first, check how much time remains before your Secret Garden session. This order is a suggestion, not a fixed official visiting route.
Tell the Secret Garden entrance and the outer palace gate apart. The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center's Donhwamun repair notice explains that during the work, the western Geumhomun is used as a temporary entrance and the neighboring Sobangmun as the exit. Because that notice planned repair work through 2026, plan around the entrance in the notice rather than Donhwamun; check the actual entrance again with the notice for your visit date and the signs on site. Even if you cross from Changgyeonggung through Hamyangmun into the halls area, you cannot go straight into the Secret Garden. You need to check the separate ticket and the gate's operating hours, and there is also a notice that re-entry is not allowed.

Reduce the scope of your visit for closures, rain and walking effort
Changdeokgung's regular closing day is Monday. If a Monday coincides with a public holiday or substitute holiday, the palace opens that day and closes on the first non-holiday day after it, so the day of the week alone is not enough; check the notice for your visit date. General viewing of the palace halls in September and October is listed as 09:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:00. That last-entry time does not indicate the last Secret Garden session.
The Secret Garden is an area of hills mixed with unpaved paths. The official FAQ warns about using strollers and wheelchairs on steep sections and about paths that turn muddy in the rain. If steps or slopes are a burden, consider narrowing your visit to the palace halls, and check the on-site guide to ramps and visiting routes. The halls also have some slopes and restricted access to building platforms, so you cannot assume every section is barrier-free.
The Secret Garden route may be adjusted if it rains or the temperature changes. Seeing all the ponds and pavilions in the photos is not a confirmed plan; follow the areas open on the day. Rather than ignoring the walking effort just because you have a Secret Garden ticket, first decide what range your group can manage.
If you try the morning on-site tickets, compare Insadong and Ikseon-dong hotels first
If you plan to move early in the morning for on-site Secret Garden tickets, you can consider the Anguk, Insadong and Ikseon-dong area as a base. The two hotels below are candidates for comparing a regular hotel room with a residence that has a kitchen. Staying nearby does not guarantee you will get an on-site ticket. Check separately the route from the hotel address to that day's palace entrance and the walk from the halls to the Secret Garden entrance.
If you have already booked a hotel in another part of Seoul, you do not need to move hotels for this one visit. First work out the transport that gets you to the actual palace entrance and your departure margin. On check-out day, ask the hotel in advance about luggage-storage hours, fees and eligibility, and decide whether you can visit after leaving large bags.
Scroll the table sideways. With a keyboard, move focus to the table and use the arrow keys.
| Your travel conditions | Candidate to compare | What to check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| You are a couple or friends and want a regular hotel room | Ibis Ambassador Seoul Insadong | Bed configuration, such as double or twin, and occupancy conditions of the rooms on sale |
| You are a family or on a longer stay and want a kitchen and living space | Orakai Insadong Suites | Bedrooms and number of beds in the room you choose, children's ages and maximum occupancy |
Ibis Ambassador Seoul Insadong: a regular hotel for combining Ikseon-dong and the palace
The address is 31 Samil-daero 30-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul. The official Accor hotel guide describes the location in front of Ikseon-dong Hanok Village and the access to Insadong and the palaces, and also lists a coin laundry room. It is worth comparing for a plan in which you see Ikseon-dong and Insadong after the Secret Garden and return to a regular hotel room.
If your trip needs a separate living room or kitchen, also look at the residence below. Two beds in a room photo do not mean every room on sale is a twin. Check the bed configuration and capacity of the room you actually book, whether breakfast is included, and the cancellation conditions.

Orakai Insadong Suites: for a stay that needs a kitchen and living space
The address is 18 Insadong 4-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul. The official hotel guide introduces residences with kitchen facilities and several bedroom types. It is a candidate to compare for a family trip or a stay of several days when you want to share a meal and rest area. You can also check access from Anguk and Jongno 3-ga in the official location guide.
For a short sightseeing trip, a residence's space can be more than you need. Tell the number of bedrooms apart from the actual number of beds and the maximum occupancy, and check the conditions of the room on sale with children's ages entered. The kitchen photo below is an example that does not specify the room type, so it does not guarantee the layout of the room you choose.

On October 13, 2026, the hotel names and addresses were checked against their listings on the two booking channels. No stay dates or guest numbers were set, so rates and room availability were not checked. After you enter dates and guests through the links, check the room configuration, the total price and the cancellation conditions.
Questions that remain before entry
If I qualify for free admission to the palace halls, can I enter the Secret Garden without a reservation?
Free or discounted eligibility for the halls and restricted viewing of the Secret Garden are separate things. To see the Secret Garden you need the entry procedure by session, and you should check the scope of free and discounted admission and the proof required in the official fee guide separately.
If I have no Secret Garden ticket, can I go around through Changgyeonggung?
Hamyangmun connects the palace halls areas of Changgyeonggung and Changdeokgung. It is not a way around the Secret Garden booking or entry limits.
Is the Moonlight Tour the same Secret Garden booking?
The Moonlight Tour is a separate cultural event. The tickets for the daytime Secret Garden sessions and the on-site sales conditions do not apply to the event; check the schedule and booking method in that event's own guide.
