When will Café Central reopen?
The official Café Central homepage says the café has been closed for renovation since 16 March 2026. The work includes building systems and the kitchen, and the same notice points visitors to DECENTRAL as an alternative. The original café is in Palais Ferstel, at the corner of Herrengasse and Strauchgasse. Finding its name on a map does not mean you can book a table or enter the original rooms.
Read the reopening estimate with care. The banner at the top of the homepage currently points to winter 2026, while the older home page and an event notice lower on the homepage still refer to autumn 2026. No specific reopening date was confirmed in the notice checked on 28 October 2026. If you are planning an autumn or winter trip, do not assume the original café will be open on your travel day based on an estimated season. Check the operator's latest notice before you leave.

If the vaulted ceiling and large hall you have seen in older visitor photos are the main reason for your visit, DECENTRAL will not give you the same setting. It is a café in another building. If your aim is to fit Café Central's pastries and coffee into a day in central Vienna, the temporary venue may still be worth considering. Choose based on whether you want to see that historic room or take a coffee and dessert break.
DECENTRAL is at Freyung 3/1, inside Palais Harrach
Save the destination as DECENTRAL, Freyung 3/1, 1010 Wien. DECENTRAL's own website identifies Palais Harrach as the visitor location and links to a map. This is a different building from Palais Ferstel, where Café Central is located. Keep the business name and street address together when saving the destination rather than shortening it to the name of the original café.

The operator's address, Herrengasse 14, also appears in the footer of the official site. Do not use that as DECENTRAL's visitor address. Check the Freyung 3/1 address under “Contact & Location” and the site's “im Palais Harrach” description. When you find the café in your phone's map app, compare the displayed address before setting off. That small check helps avoid routing yourself to the original Café Central.
If you also want to see the original café's exterior, treat Palais Ferstel as a separate stop for a short walk. Do not assume that renovation work leaves the interior passages or entrance open to visitors. Plan to have coffee at DECENTRAL, then add the exterior only if access guidance and the weather make it practical that day. Open each café as a separate destination on your map and check the route between them.
Choose whether to visit for breakfast or an afternoon coffee
DECENTRAL's own introduction lists patisserie, focaccia, coffee and other drinks, and describes the venue as a place for breakfast, a coffee break or a drink after work. Do not assume the full menu is the same as Café Central's. Open the menu currently linked from DECENTRAL's website and check whether it includes what you want. If you have a particular Central dessert in mind, confirm both the menu listing and whether it is being served on your visit day.
For a morning visit, consider whether it overlaps with breakfast at your hotel. If your room rate includes breakfast, you might prefer to eat there and choose coffee or dessert at the café. If you want breakfast at DECENTRAL, check the breakfast terms before booking a hotel room. You can compare the cost only after your dates and the actual menu and room rates are known.
Opening times also need a source check. On the date researched, DECENTRAL's own page listed daily hours of 08:00 to 22:00, while the alternative-venue description on the Café Central homepage still said it opened at 07:30. This guide prioritises the venue's own listing. If you want to connect the visit with an early train or timed museum entry, confirm the opening time and when breakfast items are served for your chosen date.
For an afternoon stop, leave room to sit and order instead of squeezing the café into a short gap before another booking. Waiting times for a table and food were not confirmed, so there is no reliable number of minutes to budget. If your next visit has a fixed entry time, plan around that booking first and fit the café before or after wherever you have enough time.
The venue's website gives a phone number and an email address for table enquiries. Contact them with your group size and preferred time if you need everyone seated together or want an indoor table. The mention of a terrace does not confirm that outdoor dining will be available on a cold day, so ask about indoor seating and that day's arrangements.
Choose where to stay for the whole day, not just one café
On a day spent walking around the Old Town, a break at the Freyung café can fit into a central Vienna itinerary. You could leave your hotel for the café, return to the same room for a rest, then continue in the afternoon. Whether that return trip is convenient depends on the hotel's actual location and how much walking your group is comfortable with. Choose the area you will return to most often before changing hotels for the sake of one café.

If you expect to spend most of a day around the MuseumsQuartier, you could keep a hotel in that area and combine the café with a separate Old Town visit. Moving between hotels also takes time for checkout, luggage storage and a new check-in. On a short trip, staying in one place and choosing a day for the café may mean less time spent moving bags.
Café Landtmann is another coffeehouse option in Vienna. If you were hoping for Café Central's large historic room and DECENTRAL does not suit the visit, see Café Landtmann's official location details. Its address is Universitätsring 4. It is a separate café, not a DECENTRAL branch and not a venue that takes over Café Central reservations, so check its menu and booking terms separately. Rather than trying to fit in several cafés, leave time to rest at the one that suits the day's plan.
On checkout day, check the hotel's luggage-storage hours before assuming you can take your bags to the café. If the hotel can store them, map the return trip to collect them after coffee and a walk. If you are heading straight to the airport or a railway station, include the extra time needed to go back to the hotel. If the transfer only works by cutting your café visit short, choose another day.
Compare Old Town access with a stay near the MuseumsQuartier
Two hotels to compare are Boutique Hotel Das Tigra in the Old Town and 25hours Hotel Vienna at MuseumsQuartier in Neubau. Their names and addresses were checked against the official hotel websites and Agoda and Trip.com. This is a comparison of locations, not a first-hand hotel review or a room recommendation for specific dates. Consider where you will spend the rest of the trip rather than choosing a hotel for one café visit.
Das Tigra: stay in the Old Town and include the café nearby
Das Tigra's official address is Tiefer Graben 14-20, 1010 Vienna. The hotel says it is in the historic district, within walking reach of central sights and cafés. It is a candidate to compare if time around Freyung and the Old Town will anchor your trip. Check the map to see whether the location suits your plan to visit the café after breakfast or return to your room for a rest during a walk.
The hotel lists a breakfast buffet, but that does not mean breakfast is included in every booking. If you plan to eat at DECENTRAL on some mornings, compare the rate with breakfast against your own meal plans. A hotel in the Old Town may be less convenient if your days are mostly around the MuseumsQuartier or outside Vienna. Also consider how you will get from your arrival station to the hotel with luggage and return at night.

On the booking page, check the guest capacity and bed arrangement of the room you select as separate details. A late arrival can make the check-in hours relevant; an early departure can put breakfast times and luggage storage higher on your list. Read the cancellation deadline with its local time and check what the rate includes, such as breakfast, taxes and other charges. Your travel dates and party size are not set, so this guide does not give a price or claim that rooms are available.
25hours: stay near the museums and visit the café separately
The address for 25hours Hotel Vienna at MuseumsQuartier is Lerchenfelder Straße 1-3, 1070 Vienna. Agoda and Trip.com display different German-derived names for the hotel, but the English name and address match. The word MuseumsQuartier in the name does not mean the hotel is inside a museum building.
The hotel's own information places it in Neubau, around the MuseumsQuartier. Compare it if you expect to spend more of your time at museums and plan to visit the Old Town café separately. If you want breakfast at the Freyung café every day or expect to return to the Old Town often, compare the actual journeys with a stay at Das Tigra. Use a map to check the route from the hotel entrance to DECENTRAL, including any walking and public transport.

The official room descriptions cover different sizes and bed types, with options such as a bathtub or a view. Do not assume every room includes the terrace or view shown in hotel photos; read the description for the room type you select. Check the room orientation, bed arrangement, breakfast inclusion and cancellation terms before comparing it with another stay. As with Das Tigra, no travel dates were entered to confirm a room or total price.
Recheck three things once your travel date is set
First, look for a confirmed reopening notice for the original Café Central. If the operator confirms that it has reopened, reconsider a visit there; otherwise, set DECENTRAL as your destination. Second, confirm DECENTRAL's opening hours, menu and table arrangements for your visit day. Third, check whether the trip from your hotel to the café fits around your next booking or airport transfer. This order makes it easier to adjust the café plan if the information changes without rebuilding the whole itinerary.
If seeing the original room matters most, you could wait until a reopening is confirmed. If coffee and dessert are the priority, consider the Freyung venue without expecting the same interior or menu as the original Café Central. Choose between a stay in the Old Town and a stay near the MuseumsQuartier based on the rest of your trip.
