If you sleep on the island, you no longer need to travel to Melbourne at night, but you still need a vehicle back to your accommodation. This guide is an itinerary suggestion comparing the two options from official transport, facility and hotel guidance. It is not a review from a visit or a stay, and because no travel dates or number of guests are set, it promises no prices or remaining rooms.
A Melbourne return tour or one night in Cowes: which fits?
Scroll the table sideways. With a keyboard, move focus to the table and use the arrow keys.
| Option | Best for | What you accept | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melbourne return coach tour | You want to keep your current hotel and finish the viewing in a single day | A fixed meeting, viewing and return schedule, and a late return | The type of viewing ticket, the meeting point, the drop-off point on return and the expected time |
| One night in Cowes | You also want to spend the next morning on the island | Moving luggage and changing hotels, plus a separate car to and from the viewing area | Transport to Cowes, the evening car, hotel check-in and key collection |
If you take a tour that returns to Melbourne, do not pack an early airport departure or a next-morning tour tightly behind it. Conversely, one night in Cowes does not mean you can move freely to other places on the island. Without a car, you need to check the next day's transport as well.
Compare the Melbourne hotel candidate and the Cowes accommodation candidate below. Neither property is confirmed to include tour pickup or a Penguin Parade shuttle.
The penguin viewing ticket and the transport are not the same booking
Buying only the Penguin Parade viewing ticket does not bring you from Melbourne or take you back to your hotel. First look at the viewing option you chose and the visit date in the official viewing guidance. Some coach tour products include the viewing ticket, so read what is included to avoid buying the same admission twice.
For example, the Autopia Phillip Island tour is described as including a coach from Melbourne and General Viewing. If you want to switch to other seating or a guided viewing, ask the seller whether that is possible and what extra conditions apply. Inclusions, meeting points and operating languages differ by tour, so do not treat every penguin tour with the same name as the same product.

Match the sunset time to the arrival conditions on your ticket
The penguins return from the sea around sunset, so the viewing time changes with the season. Look at the operator's expected arrival calendar for your visit date, and read the session and arrival notes on your booking confirmation as well. The calendar gives expected times; it does not guarantee that the penguins appear at exactly that time.
The operator advises arriving at least 1 hour before the expected arrival time for General Viewing and Penguins Plus, and 30 minutes before for Underground. Guided tours have their own start times, so follow the ticket for that tour. Do not count the time you reach the car park or the taxi drop-off point as the time you sit in the viewing stand; leave margin for entry and walking.
The viewing takes place outdoors. According to the official visitor information, prepare a jacket and rain gear for wind, rain and cool evenings. Photography and video recording are prohibited after sunset. This includes phones with the flash turned off.
To return to Melbourne, check the tour's drop-off point
A return coach tour is the easiest way to link the viewing and the return to the city without a car. But do not expect hotel pickup just because a tour says "from Melbourne". Check separately whether it is a designated meeting point or hotel pickup, and whether you are dropped off at the same place on return.
The official Autopia product page shows the return time inconsistently in places, so this guide does not fix a specific time. Check the expected return time in the booking information for your travel date or in the operator's reply, and also settle the last leg from that point to your hotel. Your return may run late depending on traffic and how the penguin viewing goes that day, so choose carefully if you must make a flight or last transport that night.
If you keep your Melbourne hotel, the plan can work without taking your suitcase to the island. A same-day check-out is a separate case. Check whether the hotel can store luggage and until what time you can collect it late. If you check in for the first time that day, tell the hotel your expected arrival time and get a reply that your booking will be held.
If you sleep in Cowes, arrange the trip to and from the viewing area first
If you use public transport, check the Melbourne departure and Cowes arrival connection in V/Line's timetable for your visit date and service changes. Some services take a Metro train from Southern Cross to Dandenong and continue by coach, and there is also a change to another service at Koo Wee Rup. Do not read "bus from Melbourne to Cowes" as one direct service in every case.
Even after you arrive in Cowes, a separate trip to Summerlands, where the Penguin Parade is, remains. The facility's access guidance points to local taxis. Do not book only the car to the viewing area; also check the date, expected time, pickup point, contact method and fare for the car back after the viewing. A note that the hotel can call a taxi does not mean a vehicle is secured at that time.
Checking in and leaving your luggage before the viewing can be the more convenient order. If you arrive late, check in advance how to collect your key and when staff are available. Do not assume that having booked a room lets you enter after midnight without any procedure.
As checked on 28 October 2026, the Nobbies Centre, café and toilets are closed, while the boardwalks and car park remain open. For toilets, the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre opens daily from noon, and public toilets are also available at its car park. Conditions may change, so check the official Nobbies update and visitor information before setting out. With no public transport between the attractions, one night on the island alone does not solve getting between sights.

If you keep your Melbourne hotel: ibis Melbourne Central
ibis Melbourne Central is a hotel to consider when you use a return coach tour from a city-center base. The address in the official hotel guidance is 399 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne 3000. It is a different hotel from the similarly named ibis Melbourne Hotel and Apartments on Therry Street and the ibis budget on Elizabeth Street, so check the address on the booking page too.
This hotel is in the same building as the Novotel, and the official guidance puts the reception on level 2. Standard check-in is from 14:00 and check-out until 11:00. You can keep a city hotel, but nothing confirms that the tour you choose picks up here. First see whether the actual meeting point and return drop-off point suit the hotel.
The drawback is returning to the city late after the viewing. If you plan to check in or collect luggage you checked out that day, give the hotel your expected time and confirm the procedure. Compare room size, bed configuration, breakfast and cancellation terms on the product offered once you enter dates and number of guests.

If you stay on the island: Kaloha Holiday Resort
Kaloha Holiday Resort is a candidate to consider when you make Cowes your base. The hotel's official site gives its location as the corner of Steele Street and Chapel Street, Cowes VIC 3922. Trip.com shows 17-21 Steele Street, and Agoda shows Kaloha Holiday Resort Phillip Island on Steele Street. Even if the Agoda URL still carries the old Comfort Resort name, check the current hotel name and address on the page.
It is a place where you can spend the next morning in Cowes, but it is not a hotel next to the penguin viewing area. Include the separate round-trip car in your cost and schedule. Before booking, check key collection if you check in after the viewing, luggage storage, the room type and beds, and cancellation terms. Do not assume that every room is a standalone cabin or has the facilities seen in the photos.
On an itinerary without a car, the key is to finish the hotel and the car booking separately. Tell the accommodation roughly what day and time you plan to return from Summerlands, and give the local car service the hotel's exact address. This guide has not confirmed a shuttle or 24-hour staff service.

Match these four things before you close the booking page
- Viewing: visit date, viewing option, arrival time and the admission included.
- Return: the drop-off point in Melbourne, or the car to your Cowes accommodation, and how to make contact.
- Accommodation: the actual address, check-in procedure, luggage storage, the rooms on sale and the cancellation terms.
- Next leg: the connection to Melbourne the next day, or time to rest before your airport departure.
For a return tour, plan the order as leaving your Melbourne hotel for the designated meeting point, then returning from the tour's drop-off point to the hotel after the viewing. For one night on the island, arrive in Cowes during the day and finish check-in and luggage, go to the viewing area and back in the car you booked, then confirm the connection back to Melbourne the next day. Do not treat the evening as complete when only one of the transport and the hotel is secured.
