If you plan to visit the Rijksmuseum on checkout day, decide where your suitcase will go before heading to the entrance. The museum has a free cloakroom, but it does not accept travel luggage. You can leave your bags at the hotel, visit with a small bag and return to collect them, or consider the external lockers at Museumplein.

The key question is how you will travel after the museum. Check whether collecting your luggage from the hotel fits the route to your train station or airport. This itinerary proposal is based on museum, operator and hotel information checked on 24 October 2026; it is not a first-hand account.

## A small bag for the galleries is different from luggage for storage

The Rijksmuseum says that bags brought into the galleries must be no larger than A4. Umbrellas and larger bags should go in the cloakroom, but the museum says it has no facility for large bags or travel luggage. Its note that small backpacks can be left there does not mean it will take a suitcase.

Plan separately for a cabin-size suitcase: it still counts as travel luggage. Airline cabin-bag limits and the museum’s storage rules are different. If your bag is an awkward size, check with the museum before setting out and leave time to find another storage option if staff cannot accept it at the entrance.

Moving only what you need during the visit into a small bag can make the day easier. Keep your phone, ticket, ID and other essentials with you, so you do not have to return to your luggage storage partway through. If your plan includes buying something that would leave you with a large shopping bag, consider doing the shopping after the museum.

Scroll the table sideways. With a keyboard, move focus to the table and use the arrow keys.

Where to check, depending on what you are carrying

| What you have | What to check first |
| --- | --- |
| Small bag no larger than A4 | Museum rules for bags in the galleries |
| Umbrella or small backpack | What the museum cloakroom accepts |
| Suitcase or large travel bag | Your hotel or external luggage storage |

The museum cloakroom and external lockers have different operators and locations. A museum ticket does not reserve a locker outside. Check the order for storing your bag and the start time on your timed-entry ticket separately, so luggage arrangements do not make you late.

## The Museumplein lockers are outside the museum

The Rijksmuseum lists Lockerpoint Museumplein, which is inside the Q-Park garage at Van Baerlestraat 33B. The operator points visitors to a glass entrance beside the Van Gogh Museum entrance and another on Van Baerlestraat opposite the Concertgebouw. Both entrances have lifts, according to Lockerpoint. Look for its signs rather than assuming the lockers are at the Rijksmuseum entrance.

The operator lists the dimensions below in height, width and depth. Measure your suitcase including its wheels and handle. If it may need to be turned to fit, leave time to check that on site. Do not assume two suitcases will fit because a locker is labelled “large.”

Scroll the table sideways. With a keyboard, move focus to the table and use the arrow keys.

Museumplein locker dimensions checked on 24 October 2026

| Size | Height × width × depth |
| --- | --- |
| M | 30 × 35 × 60 cm |
| L | 50 × 33.5 × 78 cm |
| XL | 86 × 35 × 60 cm |

The official page says the lockers are accessible 24 hours a day, describes payment at the terminal and online, and says cash is not accepted. The same page also describes a same-day online-use process and says that online reservations are not yet possible. Do not plan on securing an empty locker in advance; check with the operator on the day whether online use is available.

The online instructions say that the rental period starts as soon as you pay and that cancellations and refunds are not possible after payment. Follow the on-site instructions for the entry QR code and opening a locker. Wait until you reach the actual storage location and have read the terms before paying or opening a locker. See the [Lockerpoint Museumplein information](<https://www.lockerpoint.com/lockerpoint-locations/lockerpoint-museumplein/>) for current dimensions and instructions.

## Where you stay changes the order for collecting your bags

If you stay near the museum, first consider leaving your luggage with the hotel at checkout, visiting with a small bag and returning afterward. Hotel storage could save you a trip to an external locker. Allow time to return to the hotel after the visit and then continue to your next departure point.

If you stay near Centraal Station, you could leave your luggage at the hotel, travel to the museum and return before catching your train. With a locker near the museum, you would need to go back for your suitcase after the visit and take it with you to the station. Compare how much of each route you can walk without bags and where you will have to pull a suitcase.

The museum’s directions suggest taking metro line 52 from Centraal or Amsterdam Zuid to Vijzelgracht, then walking to the museum. The walk to the station, waiting for a train and getting in and out of the station all add time. Do not treat the train ride alone as the full journey from your hotel to the galleries. Once your date is set, check the actual route in the travel planner linked from the [museum’s directions page](<https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/visit/practical-info/address-and-directions>).

Amsterdam Centraal, May 2024.

On departure day, check which station your actual connection uses. Going to the airport from Amsterdam does not automatically mean you need to pass through Centraal Station. After choosing where to store your luggage, map the hotel, museum and departure point, and see whether the route makes you double back to collect your bags.

## Choose your entry time after deciding where to store your luggage

The Rijksmuseum requires visitors to book a start time, except for Friends. Its FAQ says Museumkaart holders also need a reservation. The museum says it is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00 and that visitors can stay until closing after entry. On your final day, plan around your own departure time first.

If you are visiting just after checkout, choose a start time that leaves room to hand over your luggage, travel from the hotel or locker to the museum and get ready to enter. Note when you need to collect your bags as well as when you want to finish viewing. Do not use your flight departure time as your museum exit time; allow separately for the airport journey and the arrival buffer required by your airline.

Avoid planning to leave the galleries mid-visit to collect your luggage and return. The museum FAQ says re-entry after leaving is generally not allowed, with specific exceptions. Unless you have confirmed that an exception applies, collect your luggage after finishing the visit.

Start with the broad order: leave your bags at the hotel in the morning, visit the museum, collect your luggage and depart. If a locker queue or travel delay makes you late, cut an extra walk or shopping stop. Leave the museum earlier to meet a train you have already booked; do not assume you can skip the luggage collection steps.

## Two hotels to consider near the museum and Centraal Station

For this plan, the luggage drop-off and pick-up locations matter more than the hotel category. The addresses of the two options below were compared with their official sites, Agoda and Trip.com. Your travel dates and party size are not set, so room prices, availability and bed arrangements have not been confirmed.

### Park Centraal Amsterdam: for a stay near the museum

Park Centraal Amsterdam is at Stadhouderskade 25. Agoda’s older URL still says park-hotel-amsterdam, but the hotel name and address on the detail page identify the same property. Despite “Centraal” in its name, this is not a hotel in front of Centraal Station; check its location on the booking map.

This suits a stay in the museum area if you plan to visit after checkout and return to the hotel for your luggage. The hotel’s official FAQ says it can store bags before check-in or after checkout. Its public page does not specify every collection deadline, long-storage condition or large-bag limit, so ask the hotel what it can hold on your checkout day and until what time.

The trade-off is the extra journey to Centraal Station if you are taking a train after the visit. You will need to return to the hotel for your luggage before going to the station. Choose breakfast and cancellation terms from the rate plan for the room you book. The official FAQ also contains older information, so do not apply an old cancellation statement to current rates.

### art’otel Amsterdam: for a departure from Centraal Station

art’otel Amsterdam is at Prins Hendrikkade 33. Its official site describes the hotel as opposite Centraal Station and lists luggage storage. Agoda and Trip.com show the same street and building number. This location suits a train departure to another city if you want to collect your luggage at the hotel before leaving.

You will need a separate return journey to the Rijksmuseum. Compare leaving your bags at the hotel and travelling back to it after the visit with moving the museum to another day. Staying near Centraal Station does not mean every museum is a short walk away. Include time to return for your luggage before your train.

The fact that the hotel offers luggage storage does not confirm free storage until any time you choose after checkout. Ask in advance about the number of bags, any fee and the storage cut-off, especially if you have several large suitcases or plan a late collection. When looking at room photos, distinguish a standard room from a suite and check the bed and floor-area details, rate conditions and cancellation deadline for the room you select.

## Note where and when you need to collect your luggage

When you leave your bags, keep the receipt or storage confirmation and save the collection location. If you are changing hotels, make sure everyone travelling with you knows whether the luggage is at the old or new hotel. If you change storage locations, update both your museum entry time and your route to the station after the visit.

If you arrive at the museum with a suitcase, check whether you can reach an external storage site before joining the entry queue. If the locker does not fit your bag or is full, consider returning to your hotel. If that would make you late for your timed entry, read the ticket provider’s change instructions first. There is no guarantee that you can resolve the problem on site or that the museum will accept a late arrival.

Once your luggage storage and transport are set, it is easier to decide how much of the museum to include on your final day. If your departure is early, consider visiting on another day of your stay. The final-day plan depends on collecting your stored suitcase on time and continuing your journey, not on seeing one more gallery.
