At Jigokudani Yaen-Koen, you cannot count on seeing a monkey bathing in the hot spring every time you visit. In autumn, food is plentiful in the mountains and the monkeys may not come down to the park at all. Bathing is not guaranteed in winter either. Set expectations for the season first, then plan for the forest trail and your return transport before choosing a place to stay.

Jigokudani Monkey Park, January 2025.

If you visit in late October or November, do not build the day around a photograph of monkeys in a snowy hot spring. Check the latest monkey updates and trail conditions before deciding whether to go. This guide uses public information from the park operator, transport operators and hotels. It does not promise a sighting on a particular date, available tickets or rooms, or what you will see that day.

## Autumn sightings and winter bathing are different expectations

The operator says the monkeys move unpredictably, especially in autumn, and may stay away for an entire day. The park can be open while no monkeys are there. If you cannot change your travel date, leave room to switch to another plan if you do not see them.

Bathing is one way the monkeys keep warm. The first-visit guide focuses mainly on December to March, but that does not mean the monkeys bathe every day or at every time during those months. Snow on the ground, monkeys coming down to the park and a monkey entering the hot spring are three separate possibilities, not one guaranteed event.

Use the official weekly sighting forecast while planning and check the park's Facebook or X updates on the day of your visit, before setting out. An estimated arrival time in a forecast is not a reservation to see the monkeys. If you are travelling a long way to get here, also check the transport cancellation terms and keep an alternative plan for Nagano.

## Check November opening hours and the December ticket change separately

Official opening hours are 08:30 to 17:00 from April to October and 09:00 to 16:00 from November to March. The operator asks visitors to reach the park no later than 30 minutes before closing and to be ready to leave at closing time. The destination is the park itself, not the bus stop or the start of the forest trail. If you arrive on a late-afternoon bus, the remaining walk may leave little time to watch the monkeys.

The park has no regular closing day, but weather, monkey behaviour or a natural disaster can lead to an unannounced early closure or closure for the day. Check the park notice and transport service updates the day before and on the morning of your visit rather than relying on the calendar alone. From November, plan the return walk while there is still daylight, as the afternoon visiting window is shorter.

Check ticket information separately. The Japanese official site announced online tickets in August 2026, and the current site gives WEB-ticket buyers priority from December to April. The older English general guide says there is no advance booking. Do not rely on that line alone to assume you can buy on site; check the [official WEB ticket page](<https://jigokudani-yaenkoen.co.jp/webticket/>) for the date and product you want. The priority period, December to April, differs from the November to March winter opening-hours period.

The operator has announced an admission-fee change from 1 December 2026. Do not carry an amount from an older trip report into your winter budget. Check both the [fee-change notice](<https://jigokudani-yaenkoen.co.jp/information/information-3104/>) and the sales page for your visit date. Park admission, a product that includes a bus and a hotel booking are separate arrangements, so read the inclusions and change or cancellation terms for each one.

## The forest trail remains after you reach the bus stop

Two common public-transport routes from Nagano are an express bus from Nagano Station, or the Nagano Dentetsu train to Yudanaka Station followed by a bus. Both routes appear in the park's official access guide, but its fixed journey times are not a timetable for your travel date. Check the actual route, stops and service changes with [Nagaden Bus](<https://www.nagadenbus.co.jp/>) and [Nagano Dentetsu](<https://www.nagaden-net.co.jp/>).

The operator's first-visit guide describes about a 30-minute walk on an unpaved trail; the access guide says it takes about 35 minutes from the Snow Monkey Park bus stop to the park. Do not treat 30 minutes as a guaranteed door-to-door time. Allow for the walk from the stop, time at the park, the return walk and waiting for your bus.

For winter, the operator recommends boots suited to snow and equipment to reduce slipping. In warmer months, walking or hiking shoes are recommended. The trail has uneven ground and steps. Wheelchairs and carts cannot be used, so do not book on the assumption that a stroller can make the full route. Consider everyone in your party and the conditions that day; postponing the visit may be the better choice if the trail is unsuitable.

Driving does not take you straight to the park entrance. The official guide says the narrow winter road from Shibu Onsen to the Jigokudani car park is closed in winter. Do not assume you can use the short summer walk from another car park in winter; check the route via Kanbayashi and current road notices.

Choose your return connection before setting out rather than looking for one after you leave the park. If you need to catch a train from Nagano, allow time for the walk down, the bus wait, the transfer to the station and collecting your luggage. Delaying your return because the monkeys appeared late can make both the trail and the connections rushed.

## Do not feed or touch the monkeys, even when they come close

This is a place to observe wild monkeys. Do not show them food or feed them, touch them, shout at them or try to provoke them. Keep your distance from young monkeys that come near, and avoid staring directly into a monkey's eyes, as the operator advises.

Ordinary photography and video are allowed, but selfie sticks, drones and putting a camera into the hot-spring water are prohibited. Do not push a device towards an animal or block the trail for a photograph. If you are visiting with children, check that everyone can manage the return walk as well as the observation rules.

The hot spring used by the monkeys is not a bathing facility for people. If you want to take a human hot-spring bath, check the conditions at your hotel or a separate bathing facility. Park admission does not include hotel hot-spring access or bathing supplies.

## Stay by Nagano Station or in the Kanbayashi Onsen area?

If your trip is built around intercity train travel, Nagano Station can be a practical base. You can try a day trip to the park without changing hotels, or leave room to switch to another Nagano plan after checking the weather and monkey updates. The public-transport journey to the park and the trail in both directions still take up part of the day.

If you want to centre the visit on the park approach and stay at an onsen hotel, consider the Kanbayashi area. Staying near the trail does not let you wait indefinitely for the monkeys: park opening hours and trail conditions still apply. The hotel move helps only if you also plan around check-in and dinner on arrival day, then luggage collection and onward travel on departure day.

### Hotel Metropolitan Nagano: a base connected to the station

Hotel Metropolitan Nagano is at 1346 Minamiishi-dou-cho, Nagano City, and is connected to JR Nagano Station. According to the hotel's official access information, the passage through MIDORI is open from 05:30 to 00:30. At other times, use the hotel's external main entrance. It is worth considering if you want a base for train travel and luggage between connections.

Being connected to the station does not mean the park bus stop is right outside your room. You still need to get to the departure point for the bus you choose, then continue to the park. Before booking, ask the hotel whether it can hold your luggage before check-in or after check-out and confirm collection hours. Check the bed setup, breakfast and cancellation terms for the room and rate shown on the booking page.

### Kanbayashi Hotel Senjukaku: an onsen stay near the park approach

Kanbayashi Hotel Senjukaku is at 1410 Hirao, Yamanouchi. It is among the hotels in the Kanbayashi Onsen area shown on the park's official map. The hotel's name and address were cross-checked on Agoda and Trip.com. It is a candidate if you want to combine a park visit with an overnight stay in this area.

The unpaved trail and steps remain even when you stay nearby. Do not assume the hotel shuttle goes to the park entrance or that dinner is served late. The hotel's official website did not load during this check, so shuttle service, dinner cut-off and luggage storage could not be confirmed. Before booking, ask how to reach the hotel and by what time, check the final arrival time for any dinner-included rate, and ask how luggage collection works the next day.

## Recheck three things before setting out on the day of your visit

First, check the monkey update and any notice of reduced hours or closure. Next, check the train and bus services you plan to use. Finally, look at the trail conditions and consider whether everyone in your party can manage the walk in both directions. If one of these does not work, keep the option to move the park visit to another day or spend the day in Nagano or the onsen area, even if you have already booked a hotel.

A ticket or hotel stay is not a reservation to see the monkeys. Changes and cancellations follow the terms of each product, so do not assume that no sighting automatically means a refund is available. If on-site instructions differ from what you read beforehand, follow staff directions. Keep your return route and next connection ahead of getting one photograph.
