## If rain is forecast, plan one area per day

**Day 1 in Hakata, day 2 in Nakasu-Kawabata and Tenjin, and day 3 around your hotel.** Grouping a rainy 2-night, 3-day Fukuoka trip this way cuts the time you spend getting wet between stops. Stay both nights in the same hotel, and add outdoor walks only when the rain has stopped.

- If airport transfers and meals near the station come first, choose a [hotel at Hakata Station](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/fukuoka/rainy-day-2n3d/#stay-hakata>)
- If you want to shop and return to your room to rest, choose a [hotel in Tenjin](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/fukuoka/rainy-day-2n3d/#stay-tenjin>)
- If your trip includes a Wednesday, check the [Asian Art Museum's closing day](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/fukuoka/rainy-day-2n3d/#indoor>) first

## Fukuoka rainy-day itinerary for 2 nights and 3 days

Stay in the same hotel for both nights and cover one area per day. The plan assumes you arrive in the afternoon and fly out on the afternoon of the last day. If your flight leaves in the morning, skip the day 3 sightseeing and go straight to the airport. It is a city itinerary that also works for an autumn trip in October, and it includes no foliage spots or trips outside the city.

Scroll the table sideways. With a keyboard, move focus to the table and use the arrow keys.

City itinerary with two nights in the same hotel

| Day | Order of visits | If the rain is heavy |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Day 1 | Airport → drop off luggage → meals and shopping around Hakata Station → Canal City | If you arrive late, skip Canal City and have dinner near the station |
| Day 2 | Asian Art Museum → lunch → Tenjin underground mall and Solaria Plaza → hotel | Take the subway between the museum and Tenjin |
| Day 3 | Check out → one stop near the hotel → pick up luggage → international terminal | Shop less and leave extra time for the transfer between terminals |

### On day 1, it is fine to settle everything in Hakata through dinner

After you land, leave your luggage and start with a meal and any shopping you need around Hakata Station. If you also go to Tenjin on the first day, you will cover the same stretch again the next day. If your hotel is in Tenjin, leave your luggage there and spend the first day in Tenjin, then move Hakata and Canal City to the last day before you leave. If your flight home is early, move them to the afternoon of day 2 and cut back on Tenjin shopping.

### On day 2, the museum in the morning and Tenjin in the afternoon

After seeing the exhibition at Nakasu-Kawabata and having lunch, take the Airport Line to Tenjin. Pick two or three stores to visit first, and add meals or a cafe in the same building. If shopping matters more to you than exhibitions, skip the museum and spend more time in Tenjin.

### On the last day, start with where you will pick up your luggage

If your hotel is in Hakata, spend the morning around the station; if it is in Tenjin, spend it around the underground mall. Ask the hotel whether it can hold luggage after check-out, and avoid a plan that sends you to the other area just before you head to the airport.

## From the international terminal to the subway takes one more transfer

To reach the subway from the international terminal, you take a free shuttle to the domestic terminal first. If you want to compare ways of getting into the city before you plan, see [the subway and bus options from the international terminal to Hakata and Tenjin](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/fukuoka/airport-to-city/>). This guide fits that transfer into the 2-night, 3-day plan.

![Terminal shuttle bus at Fukuoka Airport](<https://tripfieldbook.com/images/travel-places/shuttle-800.webp>)

Terminal shuttle bus at Fukuoka Airport. File photo (2018).

**Fukuoka Airport's subway station is on the domestic terminal side.** If you arrive at the international terminal and take the subway, board the **free terminal shuttle at stop 5** outside the arrivals hall and get off at the south stop of the domestic terminal. You can go down to the subway from the nearby 1A and 1B entrances. Also check the [airport's guide from the international terminal to the subway](<https://www.fukuoka-airport.jp/en/access/subway.html>).

International arrivals hall → free shuttle → domestic terminal → Airport Line → Hakata or Tenjin

If you plan the time from landing to your hotel on the strength of "the subway gets you from the airport to Hakata quickly," it may be too tight. Immigration, baggage claim, and the shuttle wait come first. On the way back, you also need a shuttle from the subway station to the international terminal. Use the [terminal shuttle guide](<https://www.fukuoka-airport.jp/en/access/bus2.html>) and your airline's check-in deadline to decide when to leave the hotel.

Hakata, Nakasu-Kawabata, and Tenjin are [linked by the Airport Line](<https://subway.city.fukuoka.lg.jp/eng/route/>). Kushida-jinja-mae Station (櫛田神社前), the stop for Canal City, is on the Nanakuma Line. Even when you change at Hakata Station, leave time for the transfer. With a stroller or a large suitcase, check the elevator route before you choose the exit nearest the stairs.

## Where you stay indoors and where you need an umbrella

### Around Hakata Station: meals on day 1 and before you leave

Grouping meals and shopping around Hakata Station makes it easy to return to the hotel where you left your luggage. Decide which stores you will visit inside the station, and check the underground connection signs when you move to another building. "Near the station" is no guarantee that every hotel and store is connected indoors.

![Hakata Station building and the plaza in front](<https://tripfieldbook.com/images/travel-places/hakata-800.webp>)

### Canal City: not an entirely indoor route from the station

From Hakata, take the Nanakuma Line and leave by **Exit 1 of Kushida-jinja-mae Station**. Canal City's official guide gives a walk of about 3 minutes. This stretch is above ground, and Canal City itself has a canal and open spaces. When the rain is heavy, plan around shopping and meals rather than a long walk near the fountain. You can confirm the entrances in the [official access guide](<https://canalcity.co.jp/access/>).

![The canal and open space at Canal City Hakata](<https://tripfieldbook.com/images/travel-places/canal-800.webp>)

### Fukuoka Asian Art Museum: change the date if it is a Wednesday

The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum is on floors 7 and 8 of the Hakata Riverain Center Building. The galleries are usually open 9:30 to 18:00, until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and admission ends 30 minutes before closing. It is **closed on Wednesdays**, and on the following day when Wednesday is a public holiday. Distinguish the hours the building is open from the hours the galleries are open. If your visit falls on a Wednesday, move it to the first day or replace it with Tenjin shopping. See the [current exhibitions and visitor information](<https://faam.city.fukuoka.lg.jp/en/>).

For October 2026, the museum lists *Asian Art Walk South Asia Through the Veins of Light*, which runs from September 19, 2026 to January 11, 2027. Check admission fees and any exhibition changes in the official guide again on the day you visit.

### Tenjin underground mall: early in the morning, the passages and the stores keep different hours

The Tenjin underground mall's passages open at 5:30 in the morning, but general stores are open 10:00 to 20:00 and restaurants usually until 21:00. Some stores keep different hours. Even if you arrive on a morning flight, you cannot start all your shopping right away. Rest at a cafe that is open early, and move on when the stores open. See the [opening hours by store at the Tenjin underground mall](<https://www.tenchika.com/service/>).

In Tenjin, center your plan on the underground mall and Solaria Plaza, and add side-street cafes or outdoor parks when the rain eases. Reading the connecting-passage guide at your current location helps you avoid going up to street level each time you change stores. If you have a lot of shopping bags, drop them at your hotel once.

## Spend both nights in either Hakata or Tenjin

To pick an area regardless of the weather, compare trips out of town and the walk back to your room in [Hakata vs Tenjin: where to stay in Fukuoka](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/fukuoka/hakata-vs-tenjin/>).

On a short city trip there is no need to change hotels each day. Choose Hakata if airport transfers and the Hakata Station area come first, and Tenjin if you will shop in Tenjin for a long time and want to rest in the middle. The two hotels below were chosen for those locations.

### If getting around from Hakata Station comes first: Blossom Hakata Central

**JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hakata Central** is, according to its official guide, **about 2 minutes on foot from the Hakata Exit** of Hakata Station, at Hakata-ekimae 2-2-11. It is a different hotel from the similarly named "Blossom Fukuoka," so check the name and the address together. See the [hotel's official location guide](<https://www.jrk-hotels.co.jp/en/Hakatachuo/>).

The location suits you if you will spend the first and last days in Hakata and go to Tenjin for only one day. A short walk above ground to the hotel remains. If two friends are traveling together, look at twin rooms before rooms with one double bed.

If you plan to stay in Hakata, look at double and twin rooms for your travel dates.

### If you want to rest between shopping stops: Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel

**Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Fukuoka** is at Tenjin 2-2-43. According to its official guide, it connects directly to Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, and it is about 5 minutes on foot from Exit 5 (6a) of Tenjin Station on the Airport Line. The Airport Line station and the Nishitetsu station are different stations. See the [hotel's official access guide](<https://solaria-fukuoka.nnr-h.com/>).

If shopping in Tenjin is the main part of your plan, it is a good base for leaving things in your room and going back out. On your first arrival, though, follow the directions to the hotel lobby, not just the station name. When you head back to the airport, go to Tenjin Station on the Airport Line.

If you plan to stay in Tenjin, choose by bed configuration and room photos.

The photos show the hotels' rooms and surroundings as examples. Check the photos of the room type you book to see whether the room type and view are the same. If three or four people will share, enter every guest and check the room capacity and the actual number of beds separately. A room labeled twin is not necessarily available for three guests.

## If the rain stops, add a short walk along Nakasu

On a rainy day, keep a yatai (open-air food stall) visit flexible. If you plan yatai separately, see the [first-timer's guide to Fukuoka yatai](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/fukuoka/yatai-first-visit/>) for same-day opening checks and preparing for ordering, luggage, and the way back.

If the rain has stopped after the exhibitions and shopping, a short walk along the Nakasu riverside is fine. Treat the evening walk as optional. If wind and rain are strong, switch to dinner and rest at an indoor restaurant near your hotel. Yatai is not a required dinner stop in this itinerary either.

Bring a folding umbrella, a bag for a wet umbrella, and quick-drying shoes. On days when you carry a suitcase up and down street-level exits, it is easier to shop less. Check the weather and facility notices just before you leave, and reduce your travel if there are suspended services or weather warnings.

If you want to add a day trip outside the city on a day with better weather, see [transport options when the Yufuin no Mori is sold out, and Yufuin day trip or overnight plans](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/yufuin/yufuin-no-mori-sold-out/>). It swaps in one city day and also covers choosing return seats.

## Common questions when planning

### Can you get around rainy Fukuoka without an umbrella?

This itinerary includes the shuttle stop, walks from stations to hotels, and the above-ground walk from Kushida-jinja-mae Station to Canal City. Even if you center the plan on indoor facilities, bring an umbrella.

### Can you add Dazaifu and Itoshima to a 2-night, 3-day trip?

Adding both to this itinerary leaves less time in the city. If rain is forecast, keep Hakata and Tenjin as the base. If a trip outside the city is the main purpose, plan a separate itinerary that drops one city day.

### If you arrive on a Wednesday, when do you visit the museum?

Check the official opening status for the next day, and put the museum on the morning of day 2. If day 2 is a Wednesday, move it to day 1 to match your arrival time, or skip it. In a week when Wednesday is a public holiday, check the next-day closure as well.

### Which is the better place to stay, Hakata or Tenjin?

Choose Hakata if the area around Hakata Station and airport transfers come first, and Tenjin if you want to rest in your room during Tenjin shopping. In either case, planning on two nights in the same hotel reduces the time spent repacking.

## Official information to check before you go

Transport and facility information was checked on October 4, 2026. Check the notices for your travel date and the conditions of the room you choose.
