## Pick your route by where you are staying, and your visit order from the shrine's official course

From Hakata, compare the bus with the subway-and-train transfer; from Tenjin, compare the Nishitetsu train first. From the international terminal, a bus to Dazaifu is listed. The shrine's official website puts the walk from Dazaifu Station to the grounds at about 5 minutes, but it does not guarantee the combined time for travel and worship. Worship in front of the main hall resumed on September 19, 2026, and you should check the notices on the grounds for your visit day again before you leave.

## Where do you start: Hakata, Tenjin, or the international terminal?

The times below are reference times that Dazaifu Tenmangu gives for each starting point. Transfer waits, road conditions, train connections, and walking inside stations can differ on the day, so check the operator's information for your travel date as well.

Scroll the table sideways. With a keyboard, move focus to the table and use the arrow keys.

Ways to reach Dazaifu in the shrine's official access guide

| Starting point | What to compare first | Reference time in the official guide | Check before you leave |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hakata Station or a hotel in Hakata | Bus from Hakata Bus Terminal, or subway plus a Nishitetsu train transfer | Bus about 40 minutes, train about 50 minutes | The bus stop you will use, the walking transfer to Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, and the timetable on the day |
| Hotel in Tenjin | Nishitetsu train from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station via Futsukaichi Station to Dazaifu Station | Train about 30 minutes | The transfer at Futsukaichi and the connecting Dazaifu Line train |
| Fukuoka Airport international terminal | Dazaifu bus leaving from outside the international terminal | Bus about 25 minutes | Check the Nishitetsu guide for the day's service, bus stop, and available departures |

The walk from Dazaifu Station to the shrine grounds is given as about 5 minutes. This figure covers only the distance between the station and the grounds. It does not include the total waiting and transfer time from Hakata or the airport to the shrine. Check the departures for your travel date in the [shrine's official access guide by starting point](<https://www.dazaifutenmangu.or.jp/kr/plan/getting-to-dazaifu-tenmangu/>), the [Nishitetsu Dazaifu Liner bus guide](<https://www.nishitetsu.jp/bus/rosen/dazaihu_liner/>), and the [Nishitetsu timetables by station](<https://www.nishitetsu.jp/train/service/print/>).

The shrine's access guide linked above is its Korean-language page. The shrine also publishes an [English version of the same access guide](<https://www.dazaifutenmangu.or.jp/en/plan/getting-to-dazaifu-tenmangu/>).

If you have not yet chosen between Hakata and Tenjin as your base, first see [Hakata vs Tenjin: where to stay, based on JR travel and evening routes](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/fukuoka/hakata-vs-tenjin/>). For getting into the city from the international terminal, continue with the [Fukuoka Airport international terminal transport guide](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/fukuoka/airport-to-city/>).

## The shrine's official half-day course runs from the approach to the main hall

Use the order the shrine presents as your base, then add or drop places that interest you. The shrine's guide also says that resting or taking photos can make the visit longer. The diagram below outlines the visit order. It is not a timetable that promises a half day.

![Flow chart: from Dazaifu Station through Monzenmachi and the grounds to the main hall, optionally the Treasure Hall or Tenkai Inari as time allows, and back to the station](<https://tripfieldbook.com/images/fukuoka-local/dazaifu-route-en.svg>)

A flow chart rather than a scale map, with no distances or travel times shown. It is based on the order of places in the [shrine's official half-day itinerary](<https://www.dazaifutenmangu.or.jp/kr/plan/recommended-itineraries/half-day/>).

1. **Walk from Dazaifu Station along the Monzenmachi approach.** You pass shops and teahouses on the way into the shrine grounds. If a shop catches your eye, decide first whether you will stop on the way back.
2. **Pass through the grounds and worship at the main hall.** The shrine's official half-day course covers the landmarks on the grounds and worship at the main hall. Follow the signs on site, and check whether events or conservation notices have changed the route.
3. **Choose omikuji (fortune slips), amulets, and ema (votive plaques) as you need.** After worship at the main hall, the shrine's official course introduces the related sales counters. Check the shrine's notices on the day for the location and operation of each counter.
4. **If you have time and energy, go on to the Treasure Hall (宝物殿) or Tenkai Inari.** You can add a visit to the Treasure Hall, or walk to Tenkai Inari, which has a hill path and steep stone steps. If the steps are a burden or time is tight, you can concentrate on the area around the main hall and the approach.
5. **Head back to the station, taking in umegaemochi and the approach.** The shrine's official course suggests trying umegaemochi at a teahouse. Check on your visit day whether each shop is open and how long the line is.

## Worship in front of the main hall has resumed, and the temporary shrine is being dismantled

In its notice of September 19, 2026, Dazaifu Tenmangu announced that worship in front of the main hall had resumed for the first time in about three and a half years. Base your current plans on this notice, but events and conservation work on the grounds can change, so check the [shrine's latest notices](<https://www.dazaifutenmangu.or.jp/news>) again on your visit day.

The shrine's [temporary shrine guide](<https://www.dazaifutenmangu.or.jp/keidaiannai/kariden>) shows it as currently being dismantled. Leave old accounts of visiting the temporary shrine out of your current route, and follow the signs on site and the official guide. The notice about the resumption of worship in front of the main hall is available in the [original shrine notice](<https://www.dazaifutenmangu.or.jp/archives/1980>).

## Check the return trip to Fukuoka and your evening plans separately

Add time on the grounds, getting to the station, and waiting for the bus or train to the one-way reference times in the shrine's official guide, then plan your return. If you are heading straight to the airport or have a dinner reservation in particular, check the last return service and any service changes for your travel date. In rain, a walk along the approach or other outdoor alternatives can feel different, so also see the [Fukuoka rainy-day indoor itinerary](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/fukuoka/rainy-day-2n3d/>).

If you are considering yatai (open-air food stalls) in the evening, opening varies by stall and by weather. Before you go out, see [choosing a yatai area in Fukuoka and confirming same-day opening on a first visit](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/fukuoka/yatai-first-visit/>). All our Fukuoka and Yufuin guides are collected in the [Kyushu travel hub](<https://tripfieldbook.com/en/japan/kyushu/>).

## Hotels to compare for your route

Hakata and Tenjin are different bases. Decide whether airport and JR connections matter more, or shopping and dining in Tenjin and departures on the Nishitetsu line. Then compare the actual entrances and room terms at these two hotels.

### JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hakata Central: For using Hakata Station as a base and planning around luggage

JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hakata Central is at 2-2-11 Hakataekimae, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka. It is one option to compare if you want to use Hakata Station for airport and rail connections as well as city plans. It is a different property from the similarly named Blossom Fukuoka, so check the English name and address together.

If Tenjin is a main part of your itinerary, allow for a trip back from a different part of the city. Even a hotel near the station has an outdoor segment to its entrance; check the exit and route if you have large bags. Before booking, confirm the selected room’s bed setup, breakfast, and cancellation terms. Ask the hotel whether it can store luggage before check-in or after checkout.

### Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Fukuoka: For Tenjin shopping and Nishitetsu departures

Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Fukuoka is at 2-2-43 Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka. Compare it if you plan to shop and eat in Tenjin, return to your room, and head out again. Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station and Tenjin Station on the Airport Line are not the same platforms; check which station and entrance suit your next trip.

If you often take JR trains from Hakata, you will need to plan the trip from this area to Hakata Station. A station connection in the building does not mean every entrance provides the same route to the hotel. Before booking, check the route to the hotel lobby, the room’s beds and occupancy, breakfast, and cancellation terms.
